Attack of the Sassy Black Woman

There was a line in an episode of Sex and the City where Carrie laments to her friends that she had to get on her "Sassy" horse. Now I assumed she was making a reference to the trailblazing yet defunct magazine edited by Jane Pratt for teen girls.

That's the good kind of sass. The following commercials for Popeyes and Vitamin Water may be teetering on the edge of the all-to-familiar stereotype that depicts Black women as shrews, tough or uncouth. While I don't find these commercials as offensive as the BK/Sir Mix A Lot/Nickelodeon debacle since that was specifically marketed to children, I do find aspects rather annoying. We need not fly into a tizzy but we should not ignore these "little" acts of racist depictions either. See for yourself.

Does a fried chicken company using a Black person automatically make it racist/offensive? I like Popeyes. I'm going to lean towards the "potentially oversensitive" reaction. Now if someone else finds it offensive they have every right to feel that way. I take offense to whites telling Black people what they should and should not feel about such matters like the bloggers at Jossip. I also admit I find the name of the commercial more problematic than anything else.

The thing is, I'm tired of being outraged. It's an emotional response that never heals and like a scab can be ripped off time and time again. We don't know whether the characters were written with that edge or if it was a choice of the actors. Ok, I'd err on the side of the powers-that-be pushing them to "Blacken it up", meaning to behave in an obvious and narrow way. I don't know though. I'm not sure if I'm entirely convinced because if these characters had been portrayed by white actors would they be deemed racist? Or Asian? Margaret Cho pulls off sassy very well. Still when certain portrayals are enacted by people of color the intention and the execution can be problematic and should not be ignored. If you think it should be addressed you must contact the companies directly and tell them.

Venida Evans' Ikea Commercials Give Me the Willies

They're like a tickle you want to scratch. Something you can't quite put your finger on. I had to do a search to get the name of the actress who plays what I call the "Oracle of Ikea". For I immediately thought of the Matrix films with actress Gloria Foster who originated that role before she succumbed to cancer. The way they created the character as some all-knowing guru could have lent itself to a stereotype though I just find it a little creepy.

Yet I am so drawn to the commercials. I believe Ms. Evans has completed six ads now so obviously the response has been very favorable. They're certainly memorable. Apparently I'm not the only person who finds her fascinating. I hope Ikea continues to use her as a spokesperson though they could integrate another long-term secondary character the way Geico uses the British talking gecko, the Cavemen and now the wad of cash with eyes - which by the way is just beyond weird.

SuperBowl XLIII Commercials

Well, there's a few already up on the 'Tube so we might as well enjoy them. I swear I had more fun reading the Twitter updates and am only now watching the game highlights. I saved myself the 3-4 hours. If you are also inclined Ad Age has all the spots for your viewing pleasure!

Doritos

I actually remember this commercial with Ali Landry from a few years ago

While I Clean Out the Clutter You Can Have A Laugh Today!

Enjoy Your Day Whatever You Are Doing!

Ikea (Winter Sale). Haven't there been times where you thought the cashier rang up the wrong price and it was in your favor?

Ikea (Mocha Milk). This is a foreign commercial. Sexy but still classy and in case you doubt that you should look at the less puritanical (or more explicit) commercials in regular rotation.

McDonalds (McNuggets Lovin'). This has the same production value as your typical R&B song and video being released today. That's not a good thing.

Ad Council PSA on Fatherhood Involvement (Cheerleader). This airs at least three times per week. I haven't gotten sick of it yet. They have an entire series of them so check 'em out!

Holiday Hijinks

I love this commercial! I took me some time to track it down though - success comes to those who don't give up. This straddles the fence between cute and annoying convincingly don't you think? Happy Turkey Day!
