Today as we begin a new year, we will conclude our observation of Kwanzaa with the appropriate seventh principle: Imani - Faith. Hey that's my name!
The goal is to believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
This collective concern and love is wonderful. I'm going to dial it back a bit though and charge that the first thing WE have to be concerned about is TAKING CARE OF OURSELVES FIRST!
When you fly, you are instructed to put on your oxygen mask before assisting others in case of an air pressure drop. The same needs to be said for us, specifically for Black women. For in far too many instances we are operating with a handicap and it's time to acknowledge that. Yes, there are plenty of exceptions, wonderful exceptions. For far too many however, that is not the case and it's time to face reality!
The faith in the community has to be manifested amongst its people by their ACTIONS. Not talk, not surveys, not reports, not diversions, not intentions and certainly not neglect and pretending nothing's wrong. I have seen the light and am working out my course of action. What I accomplish in 2009 will be a testament to that.

This may sound nuts, but my faith in people continues to even surprise me. I know , its the business that i am in. I depend on people telling me the truth.
